Bill Johnson's Issues in his 1994 senate campaign Minimize

Bill ran for the US Senate on the Libertarian ticket.  A scan of his old campaign brochure is here.  Below are the issues he campaigned on

Campaign Finance Reform

The first step in the reform process is to eliminate the power of special interest groups.  PAC contributions must be eliminated in order to create a level playing field for all candidates.  Campaign contributions by candidates must also be limited to prevent elections from being 'bought" by wealthy individuals.

Balanced Budget Amendment

Taxpayers don't have the luxury of spending money they don't have: Congress shouldn’t either.  A Balanced Budget Amendment is needed to ensure fiscal responsibility in Washington.

Welfare Reform

Our government has institutionalized programs that are demoralizing the working people of this country.  When the government rewards behavior which should be discouraged (not working, illegitimate births, drug dependency), it not only sends mixed messages, it destroys the will of the people to solve their own problems.  Our sense of community is eroded when people are encouraged to rely on themselves instead of each other.

Crime

The current "three strikes and you're out' mentality is flawed in that it addresses only the QUANTITY of prison time.  Prisons with cable TV, workout facilities and comfortable conditions only encourage recidivism.  Changes in the QUALITY of time served will deter repeat offenders and allow shorter sentences.  The failed idea of prison with rehabilitation needs to be abandoned.  We much return to the old fashioned idea of penitentiaries, where criminals pay their debt to society.

Gun Control

Out founding fathers included the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights to guarantee citizens the means to defend themselves from wayward and unjust governments.  Current gun control measures are both ineffective and unconstitutional.  The rights of all citizens should not be trampled upon in an attempt to remove guns from the few who are criminals.

Foreign Intervention

Current and recent policy disasters in Somalia and the former Yugoslavia reflect the folly of U.S. military action under the aegis of the United Nations.  The U.S. military's mission should be to protect and defend the national security interests of the United States - not act as policeman to the world.
Given the United States' current financial condition, countries running a trade surplus with the U.S. should be required to support U.S. forces defending them, or provide for their own defense.
